I don’t think I can forget that day, it feels just like yesterday. I went online like I normally do and can you believe the shock?!. I was hacked! My Instagram account was no more. I thought it was a dream, like does stuff like this really happen, how can my account just disappear like that?!

The first thing I did was to browse online to check if I was the only one this had ever happened to. Interestingly, I was so not the only one. It had happened to several people just like me.

A quick flashback to the day before the very day my account was hacked. A guy whose name I don’t recall messaged me on how he would love to help me grow my account for free. I was so naive but really you can’t blame me. I gave him all my details after he told me to accept a message Instagram was going to send me on my email, which I did.

The thought that he would actually delete my account didn’t come to my mind at all. You could probably call me a fool, but I was really desperate to grow my account so fast. I had worked on the account to get to just 4,500 followers in four years. I was so tired of social media, I had put in all the work I knew how to but I was not growing like I expected, I was not even getting the engagement I wanted. It was like zero engagement, but thankfully, today the story is different. I grew my new Instagram account from 0 followers to 5,600 followers and still counting.

Initially, I was so angry because I had carried out a lot of research within four years and had learnt so much about social media. That’s why after my account got hacked, I thought it was over for me, like seriously where would I even start from. However, I’ve been able to overcome that challenge and rebuild my Instagram account within a shorter time.

REMOVE THE GRAVE CLOTHES 🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹 There are people God has put in our lives to help restore them, but too often we keep looking down on others and asking them why they keep making bad choices,?why they keep behaving like they are? So judgementally Instead of looking down on others, we should show them love. Love heals, love restores. There are people that are going through a lot and the truth is if we were in their shoes, we probably would be in a worse place than they are. God’s love shown in his grace and mercy saved us from wrong choices we were neck deep in. If God has given us mercy so freely, it is only right that we show others such unquantifiable Love shown in our mercifulness. There are a lot judgmental people in this world but where are the healers? Check Eph. 4: 32 (msg) . . The story of Hosea teaches us of how God loves us so much, such that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us (Rom. 5:6,8) and even when we commit sin he forgives us. God told Hosea to marry a woman who was a prostitute. I’m sure that in this generation if God ever tells any Christian to marry a prostitute they would bind the devil and say that must be the Devil. This story teaches us that we should not judge people but rather correct them with love and keep praying for them. . . Lazarus was wrapped with grave clothes when He died, even after Jesus had done something on the inside by raising him from the dead, He was still bound on the outside. Somebody had to remove his grave clothes, if not, he wouldn't have been able to experience what God has done for him. There are people around us wearing grave clothes, God has done something on the inside but they are still bound on the outside. Somebody has to step up to remove their grave clothes, don't judge people by appearance, just like Lazarus; He had risen but on the outside the grave clothes were smelling and disgusting but someone had to remove them, maybe the person who needs your help has so many issues, maybe he smokes, or she drinks but you must be patient and show them love because love changes people 🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹🔹

So in this post, I’m going to be showing you 3 Ways to Protect Your Instagram Account from Being Hacked:

1. Have Different Password:

This is something most people don’t do. They feel it’s better to use just one password for easy remembrance, but that singular action makes social media users vulnerable to their accounts being hacked. Whether you like it or not, using different passwords for your social media keeps your accounts safe. Mark James, Security Specialist at ESET said we should protect ourselves against opportunistic attacks by not reusing passwords and ensuring any password we do use is strong, preferably [with] at least three random non-associated words with capital letters, special characters and if possible the odd ‘space’ thrown in for good measure.

2. Make Sure Your Email Account is Secure:

Your email is a bit like a gateway to your online accounts. If someone has access to it, they also have access to nearly everything else you’ve used your email for. So make sure it’s secure! Most email providers have systems in place to block unwanted login attempts and offer security measures like email encryption and two-factor authentication. If you truly want to keep your Instagram account safe, you need to make sure your email account is equally as safe.

3. Turn on Two-Factor Authentication:

With Two-factor authentication turned on, whenever you log into Instagram from an unrecognized device, you’ll be prompted to enter an SMS security code, along with your username and password. This can help thwart any attempts by hackers to log into your account and change your contact information.

To turn two-factor authentication on, head to your Instagram profile and tap the Settings button. Then scroll down and tap Two-Factor Authentication.

Tips if your Instagram account gets hacked

Despite a recent frustration with the Instagram algorithm and general visibility on the app, I was absolutely so sad to have lost my account when it was hacked. I really thought I would not be able to recover it and that 4 years of growing my Instagram community and building my personal photo diary would be lost forever. These are are few tips that can help you:

  • Stay calm! Easier said than done but you need to focus. It really helped me because I could actually make some better decisions.
  • Change all emails and passwords on your other social media apps in case the hacker has access to these accounts.
  • Have a back up blank account ready in case you need to ‘save’ your previous username if the hacker changes the name on your account.
  • Always enable Two-factor authentication for added security.
  • Be persistent and patient in contacting Instagram, I didn’t try contacting them because I felt it will take them so long to reply me.
  • Spread the word on your other social media accounts and also do a lot of research and read about other people’s experiences. It really helps to know you are not alone in this.
  • Just in case you can’t retrieve back your account, it was probably deleted by Instagram. Yes, they do that when they notice something unusual. However, you can still start another one. I grew my account from 0 to more than 5,000 followers in just two months. If I could do that, so can you, and much more.
