Music has always been my passion, music is life and there is just something so unique about music that make People happy. There are times in my life when I am so sad and then I would listen to some songs and then my mood would get so much better, music not only have so much positive effect on me alone, it has that effect on you too, here are some popular types of music you should know:

1) Rock: Rock music came into existence in the rock and roll era of the 1950s. Rock music has its focus mainly on guitars, drums and heavy vocals. However, use of piano, synthesizer, saxophone, flute, mandolin and sitar has also been witnessed in the modern rock era. These instruments are mainly used to create a deeper impact.

2)Reggae: A type of West Indian popular music having four beats to the bar, the upbeat being strongly accented

3)Pop music: A type of music, usually played on electronic instruments, that is popular with many people because it consists of short songs with a strong beat and simple tunes that are easy to remember. Pop music is often simply called pop.

4)Classical Music: In the 20th century, Nigeria produced a number of classical composers; these include Lazarus Ekwueme, Fela Sowande, Dan Agu, Joshua Uzoigwe, Ayo Bankole, Sam Ojukwu, Akin Euba, and Godwin Sadoh. Sowande was one of the first and most famous African composers in the Western classical tradition, and founder of the Nigerian art music tradition. Sowande was also an organist and jazz musician, incorporating these and elements of Nigerian folk music into his work. Nigeria currently has 21st century prominent classical musicians including concert pianists Babatunde Sosan, Sodi Braide, Echezonachukwu Nduka, Glen Inanga, and Romanian-Nigerian Rebeca Omordia.

5) Rap: is a musical form of vocal delivery that incorporates “rhyme, rhythmic speech, and street vernacular”, which is performed or chanted in a variety of ways, usually over a backbeat or musical accompaniment. Rap differs from spoken-word poetry in that rap is usually performed in time to an instrumental track. Rap is often associated with, and is a primary ingredient of hip-hop music, but the origins of the phenomenon predate hip-hop culture.

6) Jazz: Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and developed from roots in blues and ragtime. Jazz is seen by many as “America’s classical music”. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, jazz has become recognized as a major form of musical expression.

7) Rock: is a broad genre of popular music that originated as “rock and roll” in the United States in the early 1950s, and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later, particularly in the United Kingdom and in the United States.It has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, a style which drew heavily on the genres of blues, rhythm and blues, and from country music.

8) Hip hop: is a culture and art movement that began in the Bronx in New York City during the late 1970s. The origins of the word are often disputed. It is also argued as to whether hip hop started in the South or West Bronx.


9) Techno: Techno is a form of electronic dance music that emerged in Detroit, Michigan, in the United States during the mid-to-late 1980s.The first recorded use of the word techno in reference to a specific genre of music was in 1988. Many styles of techno now exist, but Detroit techno is seen as the foundation upon which a number of sub-genres have been built.

10) Blues: Blues is a music genre and musical form originated by African Americans in the Deep South of the United States around the end of the 19th century

11) Rock and Roll: A type of pop music originating in the 1950s as a blend of rhythm and blues and country and western. It is generally based upon the twelve-bar blues, the first and third beats in each bar being heavily accented.

12) Country music: The origins of country music are the folk music of working class Americans, who blended popular songs, Irish and Celtic fiddle tunes, traditional English ballads, cowboy songs, and various musical traditions from European immigrants. Country music, also known as country and western (or simply country), and hillbilly music, is a genre of popular music that originated in the southern United States in the early 1920s.It takes its roots from genres such as folk music (especially Appalachian folk and Western music) and blues.

13) Cool jazz: Cool jazz is a style of modern jazz music that arose in the United States after World War II. It is characterized by relaxed tempos and lighter tone, in contrast to the fast and complex bebop style. Cool jazz often employs formal arrangements and incorporates elements of classical music. Broadly, the genre refers to a number of post-war jazz styles employing a more subdued approach than that found in other contemporaneous jazz idioms.

14) Soul: is a popular music genre that originated in the African American community in the United States in the 1950s and early 1960s. It combines elements of African-American gospel music, rhythm and blues and jazz. Soul music became popular for dancing and listening in the United States, where record labels such as Motown, Atlantic and Stax were influential during the Civil Rights Movement. Soul also became popular around the world, directly influencing rock music and the music of Africa.

15) Salsa: Salsa is the product of various musical genres including the Cuban son montuno, guaracha, cha cha chá, mambo, and to a certain extent bolero, and the Puerto Rican bomba and plena. Latin jazz, which was also developed in New York City, has had a significant influence on salsa arrangers, piano guajeos, and instrumental soloists. Salsa music is a popular dance music genre that initially arose in New York City during the 1960s.

16) Metal: is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom.With roots in blues rock, psychedelic rock, and acid rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. The genre’s lyrics and performance styles are sometimes associated with aggression and machismo

17) High life: High Life Music (full name Les Disques HLM High Life Music) is a Montreal based independent record label created in 2002 by Da Vinci of Vice Verset, specialising in urban music. Its artists have been nominated by Association québécoise de líndustrie du disque (ADISQ) in 2006 and 2007 for the Quebec hip-hop album of the year. Some of the music has also been reviewed on CBC Radio


18)Afrobeat: The first Afrobeat track, ‘Ariwo’, was recorded by saxophonist Chris Ajilo in 1961. The genre was popularised by Fela Kuti with a series of ground-breaking releases from 1960 till his death in 1997. This brought him and the genre international acclaim. Fela’s contemporary Orlando Julius later enjoyed sustained international acclaim. Fela’s sons, Femi and Seun Kuti carry his legacy with individual imprints. Others include keyboardist and band-leader Dele Sosimi and vocalist Ade Bantu.

19) Afropop: The term “afropop” (also styled afro-pop or afro pop) is sometimes used to refer to contemporary African pop music. The term does not refer to a specific style or sound, but is used as a general term for African popular music. African popular music, like African traditional music, is vast and varied. Most contemporary genres of African popular music build on cross-pollination with western popular music. Many genres of popular music like blues, jazz, salsa, zouk, and rumba derive to varying degrees on musical traditions from Africa, taken to the Americas by enslaved Africans.

20) Gospel: Gospel music is a genre of Christian music. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context. Gospel music is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, and as an entertainment product for the marketplace. Gospel music usually has dominant vocals (often with strong use of harmony) with Christian lyrics. Gospel music can be traced to the early 17th century.






21) Juju Music: This evolved in the 1930s as a fusion of palmwine guitar music and traditional Yoruba music and was the sound of urban western Nigeria. Stars emerged, such as Tunde Nightingale, S.F. Olowokere, I.K Dairo, Kayode Fashola etc. The most prominent were King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey. Others include Shina Peters, Segun Adewale etc.

22) Fuji Music: Fuji Music is an indigenous hybrid of Traditional Yoruba Music and Islamic chant, which had existed in previous forms as apala and sakara music. Fuji Music emerged in the 1970s with Sikiru Ayinde Barrister and Kollington Ayinla, and a female artist Salawa Abeni. Other artists emerged in the 1980s and 1990s, such as Obesere and King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, the latter is one of the biggest ever stars of any genre in Nigeria. Wasiu Alabi Pasuma followed.
