Are you depressed? The symptoms of depression may surprise you. Whether you believe it or not I have had my own experience of mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest.
Back in my college days, when I had only a few months to graduate, I had a carry over. It was a trying time for me because it was my final year. I was filled with so much fear. The carryover meant I had to stay for another year, it was not a funny something. I was on a 2:1 but my dear if you like have first class and one carryover you will still have to stay back except you’re very lucky or blessed.
I decided to fast till my result was resolved. I had never done that before. I’m still amazed that I could fast that long though. It’s interesting how some challenges will make you take drastic steps you never thought you could. My fast ended when the issue was resolved. Indeed, God is a miracle worker, because it was only by a miracle that all final year students with carry-overs were allowed to rewrite those exams. The purpose of the fast was only for the carry-over issue but God used that platform to transform so much for me. I got to take a choir lead for the first time during chapel service, found favor with a troublesome professor that was taking two of my courses. Also, God showed me so many promises concerning my blog and ministry.

I hardly get sad or depressed anymore, but whenever I start noticing signs, I cheer up because another season is opening up for me. I see beauty in my pain, and maximize it to let it bring out the best in me. I pray never to go through trials or pain but I realized that sometimes your pain makes you leave your comfort zone.
Depression can affect how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities and sometimes you may feel as if life isn’t worth living. I remember a story Pastor E.A Adeboye told about a woman who gave birth to triplets after 29 years of marriage. This is such a great testimony but you can just imagine what she went through during her waiting period, crying every time for her own child till God finally heard her prayers.
There are a lot of people going through a lot but you will probably never know because they will come out everyday with makeup and smiling faces. It takes a lot of strength to be sad and still try to smile during a challenging time. Smiling doesn’t necessarily mean you are happy, it also means you are strong.
Here are some symptoms of depression:
– Feeling of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness or hopelessness
-Angry outburst, irritability or frustration even over small matters
-Anxiety, agitation or restlessness
-Sleep disturbances, including insomnia or sleeping too much
-Slowed thinking, speaking or body movements
-Unexplained physical problems such as back pain or headache
-Tiredness and lack of energy
Let’s forget these symptoms for a while, else everyone would be a depression patient because so many people go through this. If you have chronic depression I would really advice you go for help like see a doctor or mental health professional as soon as possible, and if you are a bit reluctant to seek treatment you can talk to a friend or loved one or a faith leader like your pastor. The very best thing to do when you feel like you are going through depression is to go to God in prayers, He understands and He is always there to help you. Over 50 percent of all persons who die by suicide result from major depression. Nigeria is the fifth country with 15,000 suicides in every 100,000 suicides in the world.
I am going to list the major things you can use to avoid depression:
1) Manage stress.
2) Exercise: many people who are depressed have low motivation for exercise.
3) Get enough sleep: Not too much and not too less just the right amount.
4) Avoid alcohol and drugs.
5) Watch your diet.
6) Have an attitude for gratitude.
7) Try to build your self-esteem.
It’s my prayer that everyone going through any stage of depression will benefit from this post. Additional information on how to heal from depression will be highly welcomed in the comment section below.
